Terry's Thoughts August 2020
Written across the front of my “COVID – 19 face mask” is the phrase “FAITH over Fear.” I purchased this mask from a place called “Active Faith Sports (activefaithsports.com).” No, I am not receiving any sort of commission to advertise their products, however, they do sell products that have positive messages which sometimes leads to a gospel conversation. I choose this message because I am convinced the church is slacking off exercising its faith and falling victim to the enemy of faith which is “fear.” I refuse to be a victim of fear! As scripture reminds us, when we exercise our Faith, in the power of the Holy Spirit, we will always overcome ultimately. Therefore, I chose to face my fears as David did when he faced his Goliath, in faith. I encourage us all to face our Goliaths, whatever they might be (virus, reopening of churches and life in general, social injustice, new realities in life as well as church, sickness, loss, and a host of other issues we never thought we would have to deal with) in the same power David did that fateful day in the Valley of Elah which brought great victory for the nation of Israel (I Samuel 17). Remember folks in Christ we HAVE OVERCOME!!!
August brings, with it, new challenges just as most of this year has. While many of our churches are returning to their facilities some are still meeting remotely or in drive up services. Given that things are not as we had hoped by this time, I am hosting a series of listening sessions, across our association, for the expressed purpose of finding ways to overcome challenges, discover what your most urgent needs are, and to seek new ways to minister in the new reality we find ourselves. We will meet at Galatia Baptist Church for the Northhampton County churches on Thursday August 6, the MRC for the Hertford County Churches on Thursday August 13, and Askewville Baptist church for Bertie County Churches on Thursday August 20. Each session will begin at 6:30 P.M. Obviously, we will all be practicing good social distancing during these meetings for those who attend. I encourage church leadership such as pastors, deacons, or those interested in pushing back the enemy and moving forward in Christ to attend these gatherings.
Finally, as we prepare for the Fall let us remember that our faith is much larger than the fear our world is projecting just now. Also remember, in Christ, we can face any Goliath with courage, confidence, the resources of the Lord, and with a trust in the One who loves us and will never leave us, especially in our weakest moments. We serve the Lord together and together we will OVERCOME THIS WEIRD YEAR OF 2020!!
