Terry's Thoughts October 2018
Here we are in October and heading fast toward Thanksgiving and Christmas. I know it sounds a bit early to mention these holidays, however, they will be upon us sooner than you might imagine. I would like to devote my article to, primarily, three main events occurring in October that deserves your attention. They are as follows:
First I want to remind us all that October is “Pastor Appreciation Month.” It affords us an opportunity to show our love and support for the one God has placed in our lives to care for, pray for, minister to, and equip as we seek to “Following Jesus.” The demands of most of our pastors are enormous and require more than most realize. Please take this opportunity to specially recognize what he does for the Kingdom as well as us either individually or corporately. My prayer is that we would not only show our love individually but especially corporately in amazing ways. Just one act of kindness could have life changing results for those who serve us. There are a number of resources available to help with ideas and I would encourage you to take advantage of them. Sites such as www.lifeway.com are easily accessed and I strongly recommend you seek them out. The best source however is your own minds as you pay attention to what the pastor and his family might truly enjoy. Even if your church has never done anything like this in the past I assure you it could have the potential to do amazing things for the life of your pastor which would translate into the life of the church.
Second I want to remind each of you that October 21 marks the date for our annual meeting. We will meet, as an association, at Askewville Baptist Church, that Sunday October 21, beginning at 4:00 P.M. with an Ex. Council meeting (business and report time), followed by dinner, and then an evening session devoted to our theme “We have been Chosen” based on John 15:16. We will have, as our special guest, Dr. Chuck Campbell along with some of our pastors and lay people sharing during that service. We will also feature, again this year, an associational choir led by Mrs. Betsy Huddleston. There will be a choir rehearsal on Tuesday October 16 beginning at 6:30 for those interested in participating with our choir. You can actually register your attendance on our website www.westchowan.org. Please commit yourselves to this effort for a great time of worship during our meeting. Your registration will also help us with dinner arrangements.
Third I want to make you aware we are working on a possible partnership with Bladen association which is led by one of our own the former pastor of Galatia David Foster. This partnership is designed to assist in their recovery from hurricane Florence. Many of their churches were damaged and are in need of help. As soon as I have full details available I will pass them on. Of course this is, in no way, designed to stop you from participating with Baptist On Mission’s efforts to conduct disaster relief efforts. The ultimate goal is to match churches with churches for a more long term relationship. Many people from all over the country came to help us during Matthew and I believe we were spared to share His love with those affected most from this storm. Please look for details on our website and from your pastors.
The following are other important dates we all need to remember for October:
October 11 – Transitional Pastor training details of which are located on our website www.westchowan.org.
October 15 – Pastor’s Fellowship featuring Dr. Alan Blume editor of the Biblical Recorder. Please register for this event so we can have an accurate lunch count.
Of course there are many other great opportunities for service together within our association however space will not allow me to detail them all. Many of those details are featured within the pages of this newsletter. I would encourage you to check them out. As always please remember, as I celebrate four wonderful years of serving as your Associational Missions Strategist (New adopted title within the SBC to replace DOM), it is my honor to serve you and your churches. I love you more than ever and consider myself to be blessed for this privilege. If you, your pastor, or congregation are ever in need of assistance please don’t hesitate to call. We will do our best to meet ever need no matter the request. We can do so much more together than apart and you are not alone as you attempt to do what God has called you to accomplish.
In His Grip,
Terry
